"מקרא לישראל" הוא פירוש חדיש ומקצועי למקרא, הנסמך על רובדי התרבות היהודית לדורותיה. הפירוש שם לו למטרה את המשימות הבאות: להתחשב במיטב הידע על נוסח המקרא, בשים לב לעדות תרגומיו העתיקים ולגלגוליו במשך הדורות; להעריך את הצד האמנותי של המקרא, על סוגי הספרות השונים שבו, לאור המקבילות החוץ-מקראיות ובהתחשב בהישגי הפרשנות הקלאסית והחדשה; להביא את מיטב הידע על לשון המקרא, על יסוד חקר הלשונות השמיות, המילונאות והדקדוק המודרניים; להביא את סברות המחקר על התהוות הספרים, כולל בירור זיקתם ההדדית של חלקי המקרא השונים; לתאר את הצד הריאלי של המקרא לאור הממצאים הארכיאולוגיים האחרונים והסברות היסטוריות החדשות; לבחון את עולמו הרעיוני של המקרא לאור תולדות המחשבה המקראית והחוץ-מקראית, ולהביא לפני הקורא דיונים שהתעוררו במשך הדורות בקשר לסוגיות הגותיות-פרשניות או היסטוריות מיוחדות – דיונים המשקפים את מקום המקרא בתרבות ישראל והעמים.

Uriel Simon describes the fascinating controversy that raged from the tenth to the twelfth centuries regarding the theological status and literary genre of the Psalms. Saadiah Gaon, who initiated the controversy, claimed that the Psalter was a second Torah—the Lord's word to David—and by no means man's prayer to God. Salmon ben Yerucham and Yefet ben Ali insisted on the Karaite view that the Book of Psalms was the prophetic common prayerbook of Israel. Totally opposing both of these concepts, Rabbi Moses Ibn Giqatilah regarded the Psalms as non-prophetic prayers authored by different poets, beginning with David and ending with the captive Levites in the Babylonian exile. Finally, Rabbi Abraham Ibn Ezra reverted to the belief held by the Talmudic sages—that the Psalms were Israel's divinely inspired and most sacred poetry.

The book also includes the full text of a previously unknown introduction to Ibn Ezra's lost commentary on the Psalms, which is much more elaborate and revealing than the introduction to his familiar classical commentary.

This collection of essays deals with two interwoven themes. The first is a critical reflection on the often theoretical underpinnings biblical studies. The second engage theoretical reflections on translating the Bible. Together they show the need to bring theory and practice of biblical scholarship into closer relationship with each other.
