רבים נרתעים מללמוד על הקורבנות, המושתתים על מנהגים הרחוקים מעולמו של האדם המודרני. ספר זה עוקב אחר החטיבה הפותחת את חומש ויקרא ומבקש לדלות את הערכים הניצבים כבסיס לעולם הקורבנות.

בקורבנות הנדבה נראה מהי התודעה הדתית שבאה לידי ביטוי בהקרבת קורבן עולה או מנחה או זבח שלמים, ומהו התפקיד הדתי שממלאים קורבנות החובה - חטאת ואשם. חטיבה זו מקבלת נקודת מבט חדשה שיש בכוחה להגיש את עולם הקורבנות המורכב לקורא המודרני.

הספר כולל ניתוח טקסטואלי של פרקי הקורבנות, על פי סדר הפסוקים, ואלמנטים ספרותיים מגוונים מובאים בחשבון מתוך כוונה לעמוד על המייחד כל קורבן ולהגדיר את תפקידו. הספר מנהל דיאלוג מתמיד עם שלל הדיונים הקודמים שנעשו ביחס לחטיבה זו - החל ממדרשי ההלכה לפסוקים אלו, דרך פרשני ימי הביניים וכלה בחוקרים מודרניים.

לצד פרטי הדינים, תשומת לב מיוחדת ניתנת גם לבחירת המילים המלוות את עולם הקורבנות, וכך יובדלו זריקת הדם מנתינת הדם, וההקטרה באש מהשריפה. באמצעות אלה, תתגלה מגמתו הייחודית של כל קורבן וההבעה הדתית שהוא מציע בפני המקריב.

The most important objects in the Hebrew Bible are a wooden box, styled in English »the ark« or »the ark of the covenant«, and two statues of winged creatures, »the cherubim«, that surmount it. Raanan Eichler attempts to understand these objects using the full gamut of data and tools available to the modern scholar. The study features an abundance of visual comparative material, much of it in colour, with a particularly close examination of the finds from the tomb of Pharaoh Tutankhamun. The author proposes solutions to a number of unsolved puzzles, such as the question of what cherubim looked like, and offers a new explanation of the nature of the ark and the cherubim, rejecting the prevailing scholarly view of them as having constituted an »empty throne« and footstool for the God of Israel. Rather, he argues, they constituted an empty frame, a unique cultic focus that surpassed all known systems in the ancient Near East in the extent of the efforts it represented to prevent an anthropomorphic conception of the deity in a cultic context.

Michael Avioz builds upon his earlier work on Josephus as an exegete, providing a comprehensive study of Josephus' contribution to the crystallization of the Halakha which focuses on the similarities (and dissimilarities) between his work and the tannaitic sources, as well as contemporary Second Temple sources.

Avioz begins by providing a clear definition of Halakha, and offering an explanation of methodology and sources. He then examines the structure and contents of the Pentateuch in Josephus' writing, before moving on to more specific coverage of the Decalogue in the work of Josephus and its relation to other laws in the Pentateuch. Further analysis is applied to the laws in the books of Leviticus-Deuteronomy and on laws that appear outside the Pentateuch. Throughout, Avioz makes close comparisons between biblical laws and Josephus' rewriting of them, in order to consider the reasons behind this rewriting and the origins of the texts that Josephus may have had access to in his exegetical work. Avioz is consequently able to draw clear conclusions about the interpretative traditions that Josephus had access to and worked within, and about how he used them in his writing.

בשנת תשנ״א (1991) עלה ארצה פרופ׳ יעקב כדורי (ג׳יימס קוגל), והצטרף למחלקה לתנ״ך באוניברסיטת בר־אילן. בואו של חוקר התנ״ך הידוע מאוניברסיטת הרווארד – היה ציון דרך בתולדות המחלקה. פרופ׳ כדורי לימד במחלקה עשרים ושתיים שנים עד יציאתו לגמלאות, וגם אחר כך המשיך ללמד בה באופן חלקי, עד היום. בשנים תשס״ו– תשס״ט (2006–2009) עמד בראש המחלקה, וכן שימש ראש המכון לפרשנות המקרא היהודית, והיה העורך המייסד של כתב־העת האלקטרוני למדעי היהדות Jewish Studies an Internet Journal.

אנו שמחים להקדיש לפרופ׳ כדורי את הכרך האחד עשר בסדרה עיוני מקרא ופרשנות. שלושה עשר מלומדים משתתפים בכרך הזה ותרמו לו מאמרים מפרי מחקרם: חלקם מוותיקי חוקרי התנ״ך בארץ ובעולם, וחלקם ממורי המחלקה הוותיקים והצעירים. המאמרים עוסקים בקשת של נושאים שגם פרופ׳ כדורי עסק בהם: הספרות המקראית בתורה ובנביאים ראשונים; פרשיות מנביאים אחרונים ומן הכתובים; השירה המקראית וספרות הבית השני.

בעומדו על מכונו, תפס המקדש מקום משמעותי בקשר שבין עם ישראל לבין אלוהיו. עם החורבן, סבר העם שהוא נידון להיות מרוחק ומסולק מעם ה', וכי ניתק קשר הברית בינו לבין אלוהים. עניין זה מתבטא גם במגילת איכה שלאורך הדורות קראו אותה רבים בעיקר כדי לקונן על החורבן של המקדש הראשון, וברבות הדורות גם על חורבנו של הבית השני, ועל הגלות הארוכה הקשה שבאה בעקבותיו. בספר איכה: מייאוש לתפילה טוען חוקר המקרא פרופ' אלי עסיס שמגילת איכה אינה רק קינה ונֶהִי על החורבן אלא היא נועדה גם ובעיקר לתת תקווה לעם בחשכת הגלות, ולהעביר את המקונן מייאוש לתפילה, ולאימוץ התפיסה שמצב החורבן הוא זמני משום שה' לא ניתק את קשר הברית עִם עמו. המגילה מבטאת את הרעיון שגם אם בניית המקדש נדחתה בינתיים, רצונו של העם להרגיש רצוי על ידי ה' אפשרי, וכי הברית עִימו לעולם קיימת. "הֲשִׁיבֵנוּ ה' אֵלֶיךָ וְנָשׁוּבָה, חַדֵּשׁ יָמֵינוּ כְּקֶדֶם". העם המקונן את המגילה אמנם מבטא בכך את כאבו ואת צערו, אבל תוך כדי קריאת המגילה הוא מפנים את התפיסה שה' לא זנח את עמו, ובאמצעות קריאתהּ הוא מקווה לחידוש הקשר בינו לבין אלוהיו. הדרך המתוחכמת שבה עובר הקורא מייאוש לתקווה מודגמת בניתוח של מגילת איכה שלפניכם. פרופ' אלי עסיס חיבר ספרים על יהושע, שופטים, שיר השירים ויואל, ובהוצאה זו פרסם את הספר מאבק על זהות. הוא גם פרסם מאמרים רבים בתחום הסיפורת המקראית, השירה והנבואה. פרופ' עסיס שימש כראש המחלקה לתנ"ך, וכדיקן הפקולטה למדעי היהדות באוניברסיטת בר אילן.

Targum Chronicles and Its Place Among the Late Targums heralds a paradigm shift in the understanding of many of the Jewish-Aramaic translations of individual biblical books and their origins. Leeor Gottlieb provides the most extensive study of Targum Chronicles to date, leading to conclusions that challenge long-accepted truisms with regard to the origin of Targums. The starting point for any study of the Bible is the text of the Masora, as designed by the Masoretes. The ancient manuscripts of the Hebrew Bible contain thousands of Masora comments of two types: Masora Magna and Masora Prava. How does this complex defense mechanism, which contains counting of words and combinations from the Bible, work? Yosef Ofer, of Bar-Ilan University and the Academy of the Hebrew Language, presents the way in which the Masoretic comments preserve the Masoretic Text of the Bible throughout generations and all over the world, providing comprehensive information in a short and efficient manner. The book describes the important manuscripts of the Hebrew Bible, and the methods of the Masora in determining the biblical spelling and designing the forms of the parshiot and the biblical Songs. The effectiveness of Masoretic mechanisms and their degree of success in preserving the text is examined. A special explanation is offered for the phenomenon of qere and ketiv. The book discusses the place of the Masoretic text in the history of the Bible, the differences between the Babylonian Masora and that of Tiberias, the special status of the Aleppo Codex and the mystery surrounding it. Special attention is given to the comparison between the Aleppo Codex and the Leningrad Codex (B 19a). In addition, the book discusses the relationship between the Masora and other tangential domains: the grammar of the Hebrew language, the interpretation of the Bible, and the Halakha.
