ספר זה מציג כשלוש מאות קטעים שהוסיף ר' משה בן נחמן (רמב"ן) לפירושו לתורה בעלותו לארץ ישראל בסוף ימיו. קטעי התוספת זוהו על פי רשימות עדכון ששלח רמב"ן עצמו ושלחו אחרים אל ארצות הגולה, וכן על בסיס בדיקה השוואתית מקיפה של כל כתבי-היד של פירוש רמב"ן לתורה המצויים כיום בעולם (כחמישים במספר). בראש הספר בא מבוא מקיף הדן בתופעת התוספות ובניתוח הממצאים מכתבי-היד וסוקר את הסיבות והמניעים לתוספות. עיקרו של הספר הדיונים הפרשניים המפורטים בכל קטע וקטע, שמטרתם לבאר את מניעיו של רמב"ן בעת שהוסיף על כתיבתו הראשונה. בספר עצמו – וכן באתר במרשתת המלווה אותו – מוצגים הנתונים המפורטים על קטעי התוספת והעדויות להם ברשימות התוספת ובכתבי-היד. מודעות של לומדי הפירוש לשלבי הגיבוש של הפירוש בכללו ושל כל קטע בפני עצמו מוסיפה ממד חדש לעיון הפרשני, ויש בה תרומה משמעותית להבנת דרכו של רמב"ן, לפתרון קשיים בדבריו ולהבהרת כוונתו. על כן הספר מהווה כלי עזר רב חשיבות לחוקרי רמב"ן, ללומדי תורתו ולאוהביה.

These original papers—all in modern Hebrew—were written in honor of Professor Rimon Kasher, emeritus professor of Bible at Bar-Ilan University, whose areas of expertise include, among other subjects, the Aramaic Targum, the book of Ezekiel, and biblical theology. The authors, scholars in a variety of Israeli universities, are specialists in the fields of Bible, the ancient Near East, medieval interpretation, and Masorah. Almost half the essays are devoted to Jewish interpretation of the Bible. Others feature the commentaries of figures such as Rashi, Qimhi, Rashbam, Ibn Ezra, Nachmanides, and Seforno; Karaitic and Byzantine interpretation; and all areas of the biblical canon: law, narrative, historiography, prophecy, and wisdom. The book includes an English table of contents, preface, biographical sketch, and abstracts.

The first part of this book is an extensive verse-by-verse commentary on the Book of Jubilees. Kugel's stated aim is "to understand what the text is saying and why it is saying it," and in particular to explore the numerous bits of biblical interpretation found in Jubilees and their connection to other exegetical writings of the Second Temple period. Subsequent chapters focus on the possibility that Jubilees had more than one author, as well as on the book’s specific relationship to four other Second Temple texts: the Genesis Apocryphon, the Aramaic Levi Document, 4Q225 Pseudo-Jubilees, and the writings of Philo of Alexandria.

This book, on the ancient Near East and ancient Israel, contains analysis of their political, legal, cultural, and economic world. Specific topics include laws regarding marriage, rape, inheritance, and contracts; archaeological reconstruction of battles described in the Bible; analysis of the biblical texts concerning Nebuchadnezzar of Babylon; the family hearth in the ancient Near East; herding as represented in biblical texts; literary analysis of Genesis and the Dumuzi-Inana literature, and several philological examinations.

A rigorously honest, sometimes skeptical, but ultimately deeply moving affirmation of religious faith, In the Valley of the Shadow is a powerful meditation on humanity’s place in the world and life’s greatest mystery.

In Created Equal, Joshua Berman engages the text of the Hebrew Bible from a novel perspective, considering it as a document of social and political thought. He proposes that the Pentateuch can be read as the earliest prescription on record for the establishment of an egalitarian polity. What emerges is the blueprint for a society that would stand in stark contrast to the surrounding cultures of the ancient Near East — Egypt, Mesopotamia, Ugarit, and the Hittite Empire - in which the hierarchical structure of the polity was centered on the figure of the king and his retinue. Berman shows that an egalitarian ideal is articulated in comprehensive fashion in the Pentateuch and is expressed in its theology, politics, economics, use of technologies of communication, and in its narrative literature. Throughout, he invokes parallels from the modern period as heuristic devices to illuminate ancient developments. Thus, for example, the constitutional principles in the Book of Deuteronomy are examined in the light of those espoused by Montesquieu, and the rise of the novel in 18th-century England serves to illuminate the advent of new modes of storytelling in biblical narrative.
