This book proposes a new approach to the Pentateuch’s narrative and legal inconsistencies that scholars have taken as signs of fragmentation and competing agendas. Recent studies of the scribal culture of the ancient Near East reveal that the models of textual growth hypothesized by biblicists often find no basis in the empirical evidence of these neighboring cultures. It reveals precursors for a variety of Pentateuchal inconsistencies in the narrative literature of the ancient Near East, deliberately deployed by a single agent. It explores the inconsistencies between the Pentateuch’s law corpora and arguing the view that these collections conflict with one another rests on an anachronistic understanding of ancient Near Eastern and biblical law as statutory law. It maintains that the historical critical approach to the Pentateuch has relied upon scholarly intuition concerning the inconsistencies found in the text. The recent pivot to empirical models constitutes a major challenge to traditional historical-critical method, mandating a review of its premises. The book includes a critical intellectual history of the theories of textual growth in biblical studies tracing how critics were influenced first by the fascination with science in the eighteenth century and then by Romanticism and Historicism in the nineteenth. These movements unwittingly led the field to adopt a range of commitments and interests that impede the proper execution of historical critical method in the study of the Pentateuch. It concludes by advocating a return to the hermeneutics of Spinoza and adopting a methodologically modest agenda.

הסיפורים הפותחים את ספר בראשית, ולאמיתו של דבר את התורה כולה, הם סיפורים מלאי משמעות, עמוסי ציפיות ותקוות כמו גם אכזבות ונפילות כואבות. אלה הם סיפורי ראשית שמספרים 'איך הכול התחיל', ומתארים נקודות התחלה אידיאליות, שטומנות בחובן גם השקפת עולם כוללת על האדם ועל המציאות שסביבו.

פרקים א-יא בספר בראשית מתארים התחלות מגוונות, אך בראש כולן יש למנות את בריאת המציאות הפיסית, התחלת מערכת היחסים החברתית, ראשית עמידת האדם מול אלוהיו, האכזבה הראשונה של האדם מעצמו ומאלוהיו, שבאה אף לצד קנאה ורצח, ואף ייסוד העמים, לאומיות ותרבות. התחלות אלו אינן פועלות בנפרד זו מזו. הן שזורות זו בזו ומשפיעות זו על זו, ובכך נחשפות נקודות התחלה שונות כשרשרת שבונה עולם מורכב וסוער. כדרכו של הסיפור המקראי, גם סיפורי הראשית מגלים טפח אך מכסים טפחיים, ולא פעם, דווקא המסרים החבויים הם עיקר מגמתו.

בראשית – סיפורן של התחלות הוא ניסיון לנתח את הסיפורים לפי סדרם ולפי זרימתם הטבעית, והקורא מוזמן לצאת למסע שמתחיל עם בריאת עולם ואדם, לבחון את כשליו, ולתהות על אופייה של המציאות החדשה שהתהוותה לאחר חורבנו של העולם הישן.

מגילת איכה מורכבת מחמש קינות על האסון הלאומי הגדול, ששינה באופן יסודי את מהלך ההיסטוריה של עם ישראל: חורבן ירושלים ומקדשה, והגליית חלק נכבד מעמה של ממלכת יהודה לבבל על ידי נבוכדנצר מלך בבל. אולם הגם שעיקר המגילה הוא קינה מרה על האסון הלאומי הגדול, שזורים בה כתובים רבים בעלי אופי תיאולוגי, שעניינם אינו קינה או תיאור הסבל, אלא הסיבות שגרמו לאסון הלאומי והדרך בה יש להתמודד עם המשבר הדתי והרוחני שהניצולים עברו בעקבות האסון.

עיון בפירושים ובמחקרים שנכתבו על מגילת איכה אחרי מלחמת-העולם השנייה מראה כי רוב הפירושים מתייחסים בצורה זו או אחרת לשואת יהודי אירופה כאירוע טרגי דומה או אפילו עולה בעוצמתו על החורבן והסבל המתוארים במגילה. אין ספק כי מבחינת הקף החורבן, גודל הסבל, וכמות הקורבנות בנפש, היתה השואה מאורע ייחודי, העולה בעוצמתו על כל מה שהתחולל על עם ישראל לפניה. אולם אין לשכוח שהשואה היא רק חוליה אחת – אם כי חוליית שיא ייחודית – בתולדות האסונות והחורבנות שחוו היהודים במשך אלפיים וחמש מאות שנות היסטוריה שלהם. בכל האסונות האלה ניתן לראות פועל יוצא של מאורע טראומתי אחד ויחיד: חורבן ירושלים והרס המקדש בשנת 586 לפסה"נ. מאורע טראומתי זה נקבע בזיכרון ההיסטורי של העם כאסון הלאומי הגדול, שבו איבד עם ישראל את עצמאותו וגלה מארצו. כמיעוט הוא נחשף לעוינות ולאלימות של הרוב השולט, ולא היה בידו להגן על עצמו. זו הסיבה לכך, ששום אסון שהתרגש על עם ישראל לא יוכל להאפיל על האסון המונצח בקינות המגילה, ואף יום של אבל וצער לא יוכל להאפיל על צום תשעה באב, שנקבע לזכרו, ושבו מגילת איכה נקראת בכל בתי הכנסת מידי שנה בשנה.

בספר זה כונסו מאמרים של המחבר בשני התחומים: עיונים במקרא, ועיונים בתפילה ובמנהג. רובם ראו אור על במות שונות, ולקראת פרסומם החוזר הם עובדו מחדש, הורחבו ועודכנו. המאמרים עוסקים בעניינים שונים.

מילות הקסם "אזן מלין תבחן" , שאבן עזרא עצמו מצטט מאיוב ל"ד, 3 , מיטיבות לבטא את אחיזתו האיתנה של ראב"ע בדרך הפשט, הבוטחת בכך שאוזנו של המפרש, הבקיא במקרא ובלשונו וכפוף לצווי ההיגיון והסבירות, אכן מיטיבה לשמוע את דברו של הכתוב לאמיתו. מטרת הספר היא לא רק לכנס שלושה-עשר ממחקריו של המחבר על דרכו הפרשנית של בעל הפשט הגדול, ולפרסם לראשונה בעברית שלושה שראו אור רק באנגלית, אלא גם לתקנם, לעדכנם, להשלימם ולהרחיבם. ההפניות הפנימיות וארבעת המפתחות מבריחים את פרקי הספר ועושים אותו במידה רבה לחטיבה אחת. הספר עוסק בשאלות-היסוד של פרשנות אבן עזרא ותפיסת הדרש, הגדרת הפשט, יחסי הגומלין עם קהל היעד, סודות ורמזים, לחצים פולמוסיים ובקשת האמת, ביקורתיות ושמרנות, המחלוקת העקרונית עם חכמי התלמוד (בעיקר רשב"ם), יחסו להיסטוריה ולמדעים, הפרשן בכבלי זמנו, המפרש שהיה למפורש ותולדות כתיבת פירושים לפירושיו.

רבי יוסף בכור שור היה תלמידו של רבנו תם ומבעלי התוספות החשובים בדורו. חיבורו על התורה הוא אחת היצירות המרתקות שהוציאה מתחת ידה אסכולת הפשט בצפון צרפת שפעלה במאות האחת-עשרה והשתים-עשרה. על רקע חשיבותו הרבה של הפירוש, מפתיע לגלות עד כמה מעט נכתב עליו. הספר המוצע כאן מתעתד למלא במידת מה חיסרון זה. בספר יוצגו סוגיות מרכזיות בפירושו של ריב"ש תוך השוואה מתמדת לפירושי קודמיו, החל בפרשנות חז"ל, דרך תרגום אונקלוס, וכלה בפרשנים השייכים לאסכולת הפשט – רש"י, ר' יוסף קרא ורשב"ם. בספר מוצגת התמודדותו עם השאלה שהטרידה אותו ואת בני זמנו: מה המקום של פירוש חדש ונוסף לתורה, מעבר לפירושים שכבר נכתבו עד ימיו ומונחים על שולחן עבודתו. הטענה המרכזית היא שריב"ש צעד במסלול שנע בין המשכיות לבין חדשנות. התנועה שבין המוכר למקורי היא המוקד המרכזי בפרשנותו של בכור שור, ובצד מחויבותו למסורת הפרשנית, הוא השכיל לסלול נתיבים חדשים ומתודות מקוריות שקודמיו לא פיתחו.

Abram to Abraham explores the Abraham saga (11:27-22:24) through a literary lens, following the legendary figure of Abraham as he navigates the arduous odyssey to nationhood. Rather than overlook the textual discrepancies, repetitions and contradictions long noted by diachronic scholars, this study tackles them directly, demonstrating how many problems of the ancient text in fact hold the key to deeper understanding of the narrative and its objectives. Therefore, the book frequently notes the classic division of the text according to primary sources, but offers an alternative, more harmonious reading based on the assumption that the narrative forms a single, intentionally designed unit.
The narrative’s artistic design is especially evident in its arrangement of the two halves of the story around the protagonists’ change of name. The stories of Abram and Sarai in the first half of the cycle (11:27-16:16) are parallel to the stories of Abraham and Sarah in the second half (18:1-22:24). A close reading of this transformation in the biblical narrative illuminates the moral and theological values championed by the figure of Abraham as luminary, soldier, family man, and loyal subject of God.

No nation has been subjected to a wider range of biblical attitudes and emotions than Edom. In some sources, Edom is perceived as Israel’s brother; in many others, the animosity toward Edom is tremendous. The book of Genesis introduces Isaac, his wife Rebecca, and their twin sons, Esau and Jacob. Rivalry between the brothers emerges even before their birth and escalates over the course of their lives. The question of which son should be favored also causes tension in the parents’ relationship, and most of the Genesis text concerning Isaac and Rebecca revolves around this issue. The narrative describes the fraternal conflict between Jacob and Esau at length, and many hold that this description is a reflection of the hostility between Edom and Israel. However, the relationship between the brothers is not always depicted as strained.
