The most important objects in the Hebrew Bible are a wooden box, styled in English »the ark« or »the ark of the covenant«, and two statues of winged creatures, »the cherubim«, that surmount it. Raanan Eichler attempts to understand these objects using the full gamut of data and tools available to the modern scholar. The study features an abundance of visual comparative material, much of it in colour, with a particularly close examination of the finds from the tomb of Pharaoh Tutankhamun. The author proposes solutions to a number of unsolved puzzles, such as the question of what cherubim looked like, and offers a new explanation of the nature of the ark and the cherubim, rejecting the prevailing scholarly view of them as having constituted an »empty throne« and footstool for the God of Israel. Rather, he argues, they constituted an empty frame, a unique cultic focus that surpassed all known systems in the ancient Near East in the extent of the efforts it represented to prevent an anthropomorphic conception of the deity in a cultic context.

כל דרשה נתפרשה הן כשלעצמה והן ביחסה אל הטקסט המקראי, כדי לברר אילו בעיות מצא הדרשן בפסוק ומה הם הפתרונות שהציע בדרשה. הבעיות והפתרונות מוינו לסוגים שונים וכל דרשה מתוארת באשר לקושי ולפתרון שהיא עוסקת בהם. בסוף כל פרק בא סיכום קצר לפי פשוטו של מקרא ולעומתו סוכמו מכלול הדרשות לאותו פרק והמגמות העיקריות בהן, כדי להראות בפועל מה בין פשט לדרש. הוספנו בהערות גם הפניות למחברים מהעת העתיקה ומימי הביניים שלא כתבו בשפה העברית, אבל שמשתקפות בדבריהם דרשות חז"ל על ספר יונה: הירונימוס (המאה הרביעית, לטינית), אל־טברי (המאה התשיעית, ערבית), יפת בן עלי (המאה העשירית, ערבית־יהודית).

באמצעות החומר הרב המרוכז בספר ניתן לעסוק גם בסוגיה עקרונית: באיזו מידה דרשות חז"ל הן פרשנות למקרא, תגובה לקשיים בכתוב, ובאיזו מידה הדרשות אינן אלא אמצעי ספרותי להציג את רעיונות חז"ל. את הספר חותמים מפתחות מגוונים: פסוקי המקרא בדרשות, פסוקים שבאו בהערות, מקורות חז"ל, הקשיים והפתרונות הפרשניים לסוגיהם ושיוך כל דרשה (על פי מספרה בספר) לסוגי הקשיים ולסוגי הפתרונות.

Michael Avioz builds upon his earlier work on Josephus as an exegete, providing a comprehensive study of Josephus' contribution to the crystallization of the Halakha which focuses on the similarities (and dissimilarities) between his work and the tannaitic sources, as well as contemporary Second Temple sources.

Avioz begins by providing a clear definition of Halakha, and offering an explanation of methodology and sources. He then examines the structure and contents of the Pentateuch in Josephus' writing, before moving on to more specific coverage of the Decalogue in the work of Josephus and its relation to other laws in the Pentateuch. Further analysis is applied to the laws in the books of Leviticus-Deuteronomy and on laws that appear outside the Pentateuch. Throughout, Avioz makes close comparisons between biblical laws and Josephus' rewriting of them, in order to consider the reasons behind this rewriting and the origins of the texts that Josephus may have had access to in his exegetical work. Avioz is consequently able to draw clear conclusions about the interpretative traditions that Josephus had access to and worked within, and about how he used them in his writing.

בעומדו על מכונו, תפס המקדש מקום משמעותי בקשר שבין עם ישראל לבין אלוהיו. עם החורבן, סבר העם שהוא נידון להיות מרוחק ומסולק מעם ה', וכי ניתק קשר הברית בינו לבין אלוהים. עניין זה מתבטא גם במגילת איכה שלאורך הדורות קראו אותה רבים בעיקר כדי לקונן על החורבן של המקדש הראשון, וברבות הדורות גם על חורבנו של הבית השני, ועל הגלות הארוכה הקשה שבאה בעקבותיו. בספר איכה: מייאוש לתפילה טוען חוקר המקרא פרופ' אלי עסיס שמגילת איכה אינה רק קינה ונֶהִי על החורבן אלא היא נועדה גם ובעיקר לתת תקווה לעם בחשכת הגלות, ולהעביר את המקונן מייאוש לתפילה, ולאימוץ התפיסה שמצב החורבן הוא זמני משום שה' לא ניתק את קשר הברית עִם עמו. המגילה מבטאת את הרעיון שגם אם בניית המקדש נדחתה בינתיים, רצונו של העם להרגיש רצוי על ידי ה' אפשרי, וכי הברית עִימו לעולם קיימת. "הֲשִׁיבֵנוּ ה' אֵלֶיךָ וְנָשׁוּבָה, חַדֵּשׁ יָמֵינוּ כְּקֶדֶם". העם המקונן את המגילה אמנם מבטא בכך את כאבו ואת צערו, אבל תוך כדי קריאת המגילה הוא מפנים את התפיסה שה' לא זנח את עמו, ובאמצעות קריאתהּ הוא מקווה לחידוש הקשר בינו לבין אלוהיו. הדרך המתוחכמת שבה עובר הקורא מייאוש לתקווה מודגמת בניתוח של מגילת איכה שלפניכם. פרופ' אלי עסיס חיבר ספרים על יהושע, שופטים, שיר השירים ויואל, ובהוצאה זו פרסם את הספר מאבק על זהות. הוא גם פרסם מאמרים רבים בתחום הסיפורת המקראית, השירה והנבואה. פרופ' עסיס שימש כראש המחלקה לתנ"ך, וכדיקן הפקולטה למדעי היהדות באוניברסיטת בר אילן.

This volume presents first editions of a variety of cuneiform tablets from the Old Babylonian period belonging to the collection of the late Shlomo Moussaieff. It makes available for the first time three texts representing varying levels of Mesopotamian scribal education. The first is what the authors argue is the most complete copy of the first fifty lines of the standard version of the Sumerian epic Gilgameš and the Bull of Heaven. The second is a hitherto unpublished bilingual (Sumerian-Akkadian) lexical list of unknown provenance, similar to the Proto-Aa syllabary. Each of the 314 entries preserved on this tablet provides a pronunciation gloss, a Sumerian logogram, and an Akkadian translation. A unique feature of this list is that the signs are arranged on the basis of graphic concatenation: each sign contains one of the graphic components of the preceding sign. It also yields a great number of hitherto unknown, synonymous Akkadian translations to the Sumerian logograms. The final chapter contains an edition of two groups of lenticular school tablets, containing thirty-three elementary-level scribal exercises.

With this volume, Jacob Klein and Yitschak Sefati preserve and disseminate important artifacts that advance the study of Sumerian literature, Mesopotamian lexicography, and ancient Near Eastern scribal education.

The book of Job has often been called the greatest poem ever written. This book explores the reception history of the Commentary on the Torah of Rashi (Shlomo Yitzhaki; 1040-1105), the most influential Hebrew Bible commentary of all time. Focusing on processes of canonization, Lawee exposes a hitherto unexamined––and wholly unexpected––feature of the Commentary's reception: astonishingly harsh resistance to it. He also shows how the Commentary faced stiff competition for canonical supremacy in the form of rationalist reconfigurations of Judaism but eventually triumphed in an intense battle for Judaism's soul. The book illumines issues in Jewish scholarship and spirituality that stir reflection, and even passionate debate, in the Jewish world today.

The book won the National Jewish Book Award in the field of Scholarship in 2019.
